If we focused the sun’s energy like a magnifying glass does into the solar panels, would this generate more power at all?

Not really.
It would reduce the size of the needed solar panel to generate a given amount of energy, but you cannot increase the total power we receive from the sun.

Media and political coverage lull us into dreams of a clean energy future juxtaposed against a tumultuous past characterized by evil oil companies and the associated energy woes they propagated. Like most fairy tales, this productivist parable contains a tiny bit of truth. And a whole lot of fantasy. This talk does not expose a scandal or cover-up in the traditional sense, but rather explores a particular alignment of interests and priorities that presents equally provocative questions to the environmental community. Solar cells shine brightly within the idealism of textbooks and the glossy pages of environmental magazines, but real-world experiences reveal a scattered collection of side effects and limitations that rarely mature into attractive realities. I’ve read before where the INTENSITY of the sun’s rays matter w/ regard to the rate at which energy is created/stored using solar cells. Is this true? If I live in California or Arizona, isn’t their exposure to the sun (based on intensity) greater than a person who lives in Arkansas or Oklahoma? Given this, I’m assuming that solar cells would be beneficial in the south, but it just may take longer….?

Solar cells have come a long way with transforming sun into electricity. Still they only generate 12 to 24 v. DC. after battery storage you need an inverter to change 12- 24 V into AC power for household usage. Maybe suggest wind power in your area!!

This is a time-lapse video of the September 2011 construction of a wind turbine at the University of Minnesota Eolos Wind Energy Research Station at UMore Park in Rosemount, Minn. The turbine tower is 263 feet tall. The height of the base of the tower to the tip of the blade is approximately 415 feet. The University of Minnesota was one of three university consortia to be awarded a US Department of Energy (DOE) wind energy research grant in 2009. The .9 million award to the University’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory in the College of Science and Engineering, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), supports an academy-industry consortium focused on wind energy research and education activities. It also includes construction of the US-made 2.5 megawatt Clipper Liberty wind turbine. The Wind Energy Research Station will host not only active consortium research, but also education and training of next generation wind industry workers to help further the national goal to increase wind power to 20 percent by 2030.

Question by Johnie 13: where to get plans to build solar panels at home?
I am interested in building solar panels for my own use. I think an output of around 20 watts will be sufficient for my purpose if I can tie them together and charge deep cycle batteries. Need the plans for dummies as I know nothing about these things.Thanks for any help you can provide me!
