How Do Alternative Fuels Generate Electricity?

www.edpvideo.com Effective Digital Presentations produced this 3D animation for CLECO Power in Louisiana. The video uses a combination of 3D animation and composited live video to show how the plant is using alternative fuels in one of it’s power plant. Pet Coke is a by-product of the oil refining industry and is an alternative to using coal to generate electricity. The unit can also use woody biomass – a by-product of the timber industry.

Why aren’t we trying to get airplanes to run on alternative fuels?

Question by Andrew: Why aren’t we trying to get airplanes to run on alternative fuels?
A boeing 747, according to Boeing’s website, has a maximum fuel capacity of 63705 gallons. The maximum distance it can travel is 8826 miles (7670 nautical). If you do the math that amounts to 1/7 of a mile per gallon of jet fuel! These jumbo jets travel thousands of miles per day. Why aren’t more efforts being made to develop alternative fuels for planes?

1 Megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant

default 1 Megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant

This is a video of a 1 megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant at California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles, CA. The power plant has a reformer that separates hydrogen from natural gas and then feeds the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating electricity. The plant also recovers the heat generated and uses it for domestic heating on campus. In the future, some of the carbon emitted will be sequestered in a sub-tropical rainforest that is under construction. While at present this power plant still uses fossil fuels (the natural gas is needed in order to extract the hydrogen from it), in the future the hydrogen will be generated either from landfill gas, or else it will be electrolyzed using wind, solar, geothermal, wave or hydroelectric energy. What is most important and exciting about this plant is the fact that it is using fuel cells–touted to be the future of electricity generation–today, and they are working seamlessly on a large scale.
